Alicante hosts many interesting exhibitions in its famous museums and educational centres scattered across the city -
Provincial Archaeological Museum (MARQ)
This museum is located in the old Hospital San Juan de Dios and was constructed in 1930, with the premises occupying a surface area of 9,000 sq. meters. The extremely valuable collection housed here consists of 81,000 pieces dating from the Stone Age to the Medieval times, the most important piece among them being the Lady of Guardamar from the Iberian settlement of Cabezo Lucero.
In May 2002 more exhibition rooms and conference centres were established.
In 2004, the museum was declared the ‘European Museum of the Year’. It has gained phenomenal recognition for its revolutionary approach in exhibiting Alicante’s past through innovative techniques. This museum is highly recommended as a great educational, as well as an entertaining centre, for both children and adults.

Museo De La Asegurada
Located next to the Santa María church, this museum exhibits some of the finest art work from an artist born in the city of Alicante. The collection of contemporary art which was donated by Eusebio Sempere, takes its name from the building it is displayed in, dating from 1685. Also, paintings, sculptures, mixed technique and lithographs by Spanish artists such as Juan Gris, Joan Miro, Dali, Picasso, Zobel, Tapies, Chillida, Gargallo and non-Spanish artists such as Agam, Calder, Chagall, Kandinsky, Vasarely, etc. are exhibited here.

Gravina Fine Arts Museum - (MUBAG)
The Museum is situated within the Gravina Palace, which was built during the 17th and 18th centuries. The Museum of Fine Arts exhibits over 500 pieces dating from the Middle Ages up until 1920. The exhibition includes the works of important artists such as Rodrigo de Osona, Salzillo, Vicente Lopez, Antonio Gisbert, Joaquin Agrasot, Xavier Soler, Eusebio Sempere and Emilio Varela, as well as many more.
This Old Quarter museum houses an exhibition room and an auditorium which are responsible for also hosting musical concerts. It is definitely worth a visit, especially as there is no entrance fee.

Municipal Archives
Housed in a mansion dating from the 18th century, the municipal archives hold the remains of a late-Roman necropolis dating from the 6th to 8th centuries A.D. There are manuscripts dating from the 12th century and important documents regarding the town's history, such as the granting of a town charter to Alicante by Ferdinand II in 1490. There is also a newspaper archive dating from the 19th century and a photo archive.

Nativity Scene Museum
The Nativity Scene museum is located in a typical house in the Old Quarter of Alicante, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The exhibition of Cribs contains a collection of Christmas replicas, such as examples of Christmas nativity scenes from Spain and all over the world. Also there are exhibits of all kinds of objects related to Christmas, including a life-sized nativity scene.
The Navity Scene Makers organisation was established in 1959 and ever since then it has cultivated excellent representations of Christmas Nativity exhibitions.

Alicante Bullfighting Museum (Museo Taurino)
The museum exhibits a permanent display dedicated to the most renowned local bullfighters including Vicente Blau, Francisco Anton, Jose Maria Manzanares and Luis Francisco Espla among others.
The museum also has a library, a conference room and exhibition lounge, together with an audiovisual room in which discussion groups, slide shows and talks about bullfighting are held.

Museum, University of Alicante (MUA)
The MUA specializes exclusively in Contemporary Art and carries out research activities in this area as well as the production, conservation, documentation, diffusion and teaching of this art.
The Museum bases its activity on the dissemination of historic-artistic heritage, the presentation of research results obtained on the University of Alicante campus and the diffusion of 21st century artistic works with particular focus on the most modernist forms of expression.

Types of Exhibitions held at the University:
THE 3D CONTEST OF PLASTIC ARTS MULIER, MULIERIS (Sale Sempere)
Artists from around the world come together to exhibit their judgements upon issues such as, gender identity, the discrimination, and the autonomy. It is open to artists of both genders who reflect on the feminine gender' status by any means of expression. This exhibition has been launched for the third consecutive year (2009) and has proven to be widely appreciated by a huge scope of people from around the globe.
COLLECTION OF THE MUA (Sale Sempere)
This is an exhibition representing all the works of the university museum shown from 2004. There is a wide range of authors from around the globe that donate their work, expressing a diverse collection of art.
This is usually held at the end of February and there is no entrance fee.
CORPÓREA‘s ARTISTIC CONTEST
The MUA selected 62 works for Corpόrea (2009), which counts on the Spanish Ministry of Culture's through the Support programme of cultural plans and promotion. The exhibition is a representation of the human body, presented in many extraordinary forms, from electronic displays to photographic illustrations and sculptures.
The Alicante 'Hogueras' Museum
Located in the Casa de la Festa building where the two streets Rambla de Mendez Nunez and Teniente Alvarez Soto meet.
This museum is dedicated to Alicante's most popular festivals: the Hogueras de San Juan. Here, we can find a great exhibition of photographs from throughout the years, the so-called Ninots indultats, or Saved Statues, a collection of traditional costumes, advertising posters, etc. as well as an audio-visual hall.

Miguel Hernández House-Museum
This is the house where the famous poet Miguel Hernández lived. The 20th Century house turned museum is a representation of the poet’s family life. The house includes many objects that played a significant part IN Miguel’s life, as well as photographs of him and his family.
There is no entrance fee to view this house, and it is advised to make an appointment for a guided tour.

Lonja del Pescado
This Arabic influenced building, which hosts an exhibition centre was opened in 1992 and was designed by the engineer Prsópero Lafarga. Having been extended in the year 2000, this spacious 20th Century building is responsible for hosting many festivals, charity events and art exhibitions. The building includes three exhibition rooms, a cafe and a shop, and entry is usually free of charge.

Archaeology and History of Elche - Palacio de Altamira
This is a very modern museum representing the history of Elche in a technologically advanced setting. With interactive exhibitions of archaeological findings and the history behind the Muslim city of Elche, this is definitely worth a visit.
Furthermore, it holds various cultural workshops, audiovisual shows and replicas of ancient civilisations, as well as exhibitions of many more historic objects.
This extraordinary museum has a low admission fee of just 3 Euros, and is free on Sundays.
